Scanning at the point of dispensing set to reduce dispensing errors QicSCRIPT® now scanning at a dispensary near you! 25 July 2006 – Systems Solutions Limited has today announced that it has introduced, what it believes to be, the UK’s first-ever scanning at the point of dispensing technology in their leading flagship QicSCRIPT PMR dispensary system. This technology promises to deliver huge labour saving benefits to busy pharmacists, whilst also significantly reducing the potential of medication errors occurring during dispensing. With QicSCRIPT, the pharmacist simply scans the product barcode of the particular medication to be dispensed and the relevant product information is automatically populated into the patient’s unique patient medication record (PMR), completely eliminating the need to manually key this information into the system. The pharmacist then compares the information on-screen to the information written on the prescription and dispenses only when s/he is satisfied that both exactly match each other. David Raethorne, founding technical director of Systems Solutions, explains the rationale for developing this new technology: “Our aim over the last few months has been to automate as many time-consuming pharmacy tasks as possible in a bid to help pharmacists dispense faster and safer, leaving them freer to deliver services that will actually help them generate revenue for their businesses. Scanning at the point of dispensing will help pharmacists save valuable time through faster dispensing, safe in the knowledge that it will also reduce the potential for dispensing errors to occur. This will serve to increase the pharmacy’s overall clinical governance and, at the same time, create happier customers through the provision of a speedier service”. It is envisaged by the company that scanning at the point of technology will significantly strengthen pharmacy’s risk management procedures and make clinical governance structures more robust within pharmacy when the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) proliferates further. “When EPS is fully rolled-out, pharmacists will only have to download the particular electronic prescription, scan the product, compare the product information against the prescription information, and simply dispense. It will eliminate all errors associated with the inputting of incorrect information into the patient’s PMR”, adds David Raethorne. QicSCRIPT’s latest developmental debut comes hot on the heels of a string of new innovations. Over the last few months, Systems Solutions has been busy developing and implementing new features into QicSCRIPT that will enable pharmacists to deliver more services, more profitably. Features such as interventions recording, Medicines Use Review module, appointments scheduling software and patient diagnostic functionality have been added to QicSCRIPT, along with an all-new look and feel through a complete redesign of the front-end of the system. And the company shows no signs of abating in terms of introducing new features and functionality to their flagship product. “We’ve done a lot in the last few months, but we’re not stopping there. Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll be introducing a whole plethora of new and innovative technologies, the likes of which UK pharmacy has never seen”, concludes David Raethorne.
