Pharmacists throughout the country are being called upon to enter The Helix Health Pharmacist Awards 2011 which recognise the role of the pharmacist in the wider healthcare landscape as well as the vast contributions that they make to their local communities.  The awards, which are now in their fourth year, will be presented to pharmacists who have displayed an exceptional and constructive interest in pharmacy and have thereby contributed significantly to the standing of the profession. Candidates may have distinguished themselves in the practice, science, research or profession of pharmacy.

The awards are open to all pharmacists practising within Ireland, including hospital, community, industrial and academic pharmacy settings. Categories include Excellence in Community Practice, Pharmacist Contribution to the Community, Excellence in Hospital Pharmacy,
Practice-Based Research Awards, Professional Excellence Awards, Young Pharmacist of the Year Award, Lifetime Achievement and Overall Pharmacist of the Year. Category sponsors include Actavis, Clonmel Healthcare, GlaxoSmithKline, JPA Brenson Lawlor, Lundbeck Ireland, Pinewood Healthcare and Teva. The general public will also be asked to vote for the Patient Nominated Award category as part of the overall Award programme. Entries to all categories can be submitted at www.pharmacistawards.com.

Fintan Moore and Howard Beggs at the launch of the Helix Health Pharmacist AwardsHoward Beggs, CEO, Helix Health commented, “Helix Health is delighted to sponsor the Helix Health Pharmacist Awards for the fourth year running. They provide recognition for the contribution that pharmacists from community, hospital and industry make every day. In Ireland, the pharmacy is an integral part of the healthcare system and plays a vital role in local communities so we believe it is imperative that we continue to recognise and support the Helix Health Pharmacist Awards. ”

An adjudicating panel comprised of respected pharmacists from various branches of the profession will select three finalists and a winner in each of the categories. Members of the Helix Health Pharmacist Awards 2011 Committee are as follows:

Chairperson: Fintan Moore M.P.S.I.
Cicely Roche M.P.S.I.
John Bourke M.P.S.I.
Aisling Reast M.P.S.I

Chairperson of the Pharmacist Awards Committee Fintan Moore commented, “It is a privilege and an honour to be in a position to recognise and award the contribution that fellow pharmacists have made to their community and to the healthcare system. I would encourage all pharmacists to visit pharmacistawards.com and enter the awards to ensure that the great work taking place throughout Ireland is highlighted”.

All money raised from this year’s Helix Health Pharmacist Awards will go towards The Benevolent Fund Trust of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland which supports those who have been associated with pharmacy and who are now in need of assistance. The funds are put to a wide variety of uses to improve the basic quality of life of those in need. Lack of provision for the inevitable event of retirement, or the unexpected events of being unable to work due to serious illness or premature death of a working spouse, are the primary reasons people need assistance from The Benevolent Fund.

The Helix Health Pharmacist Awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 12th at the Mansion House in Dublin. The deadline for entries is July 15th.
